Toronto — The Consulate General of India in Toronto marked India’s 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervour, as members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India gathered in large numbers at the consulate premises for a morning of ceremony and celebration.
Consul General Mahaveer Singhvi unfurled the national tricolour, marking the occasion with pride and solemnity. The flag-hoisting was followed by the singing of the national anthem and a vibrant cultural programme featuring colourful performances and stirring renditions of patriotic songs.
Addressing the gathering, the Consul General conveyed his warmest greetings and best wishes to the Indian community and friends of India, reaffirming the enduring bonds that connect India and Canada. The celebrations captured the spirit of a vibrant and confident India — one proud of its rich heritage and diverse culture even as it looks ahead to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the government’s roadmap for a developed India by the centenary of its independence.
For many in attendance, the morning was as much about connection as commemoration. The gathering stood as a proud expression of shared values and enduring ties, underscoring the deep, ongoing relationship between the diaspora and the homeland it continues to carry with it.
The flag-hoisting and cultural programme at the Consulate took place on the morning of August 15. The celebrations continued into the weekend on a larger public scale: community organisations, including Panorama India, with support from the Consulate, hosted Toronto’s wider India Day festivities at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday, August 16 — drawing crowds for live performances, state floats, and food stalls representing India’s regional diversity.
Taken together, the two events reflected a day of celebration on two registers: an intimate, formal observance inside the Consulate, and a sprawling public party in the heart of downtown Toronto — both carrying the same message of unity, patriotism, and pride in a rising India.
